History

Montgomery County was established in 1837, and named after the town of Montgomery, Texas, in honor of settler Andrew J. Montgomery. The seat of the county is Conroe, and Montgomery County is one of 254 counties in Texas. Conroe was established in the 1880's  and originally named Conroe’s Switch after the Union cavalry officer who established the town. In 1889, Conroe became the county seat, and Montgomery County’s largest community. In 1931, George Strake discovered oil and opened the Conroe Oilfield.  Many historical buildings and structures are landmarks of the town’s early history. Montgomery also has many historical sites, and it is the third oldest town in Texas.
